I spoke about the project at the Tompkins County Public Library in Ithaca, NY.  My presentation was in conjunction with their exhibit of Darby Penny’s project “The Lives They Left Behind”.   Craig Williams spoke as well.  Here is a link to their website.

I talked about the suitcases to a combined group of faculty and students from the archaeology and anthropology, departments.  It was fantastic!

WILLARD PSYCHIATRIC CENTER EMPLOYEE REUNION, 5 September 2015

This was a repeat visit for me.  I showed a few framed photographs and had the chance to talk to some of the wonderful people who worked at Willard before it closed in 1995.

I spoke about the project to a full house at the library, which included many retired employees from Willard.  I got tremendous feedback, and had some important questions answered.  It was a great evening.

 

THE CALIFORNIA HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CONFERENCE, RIVERSIDE, CA, 8 December 2015

I had the amazing opportunity to share the project with 300+ folks from California who are working in the behavioral health field.  Thirty of the suitcase photographs were on display in the lobby and I spoke to the whole group at the beginning of the day.  I was so impressed with the steps the state is taking in helping people who are struggling with mental health issues, and it was great to get feedback from people working on the front lines.

 

NAMIFEST 2016, GALVESTON, TX, 7 October 2016

I was invited to be the keynote speaker at this event.  The National Alliance on Mental Illness is an amazing organization that is made up of local chapters around the country, and does a tremendous job supporting families and friends who deal with issues around mental illness.  I also was able to exhibit prints from the project at the event.

 

LIVES ON THE HILL, Raleigh, NC, a symposium on what the City of Raleigh should do with the Dorthea Dix Hospital grounds, 15, 16 October 2016.  Sponsored by North Carolina Health News.

I was one of 4 keynote speakers at the event, and exhibited photographs of the project at the Mahler Gallery and the Busy Bee Cafe for the month of October.  It was an amazing experience and loads of fun.

 

NAMI WACO ANNUAL DINNER, 17 May 2017

I was the keynote speaker at their annual dinner event and showed prints from the project.  This was another great Texas NAMI group where I felt so welcomed.
